Getting there fast: globalization, intercontinental flights and location of headquarters

چکیده
This article examines the determinants of the location of large firms’ headquarters across a rich sample of European urban areas, focusing on the availability of nonstop intercontinental flights. We also account for the influence of other aspects: the proximity to large markets and specialized providers, congestion and tax costs, the availability of skilled labor, and the role of the urban area in the home country. Controlling for these factors, we find that the availability of direct non-stop flights has a large influence on headquarters’ location. This confirms the importance of transport infrastructures and tacit information exchanges between cities for firm location.

Cuckoo search via Levy flights applied to uncapacitated facility location problem
Facility location problem (FLP) is a mathematical way to optimally locate facilities within a set of candidates to satisfy the requirements of a given set of clients. This study addressed the uncapacitated FLP as it assures that the capacity of every selected facility is finite. Thus, even if the demand is not known, which often is the case, in reality, organizations may still be able to take s...
متن کاملIntercontinental Fligths from European Airports: towards Hub Concentration or Not?
This paper empirically analyzes changes in the supply of non-stop intercontinental flights from European airports. We take advantage of OAG data for air services from a rich sample of European airports to intercontinental destinations in the period 20042008. Results of the empirical analysis indicate a tendency towards a more balanced distribution of intercontinental flights across European air...
متن کاملGlobalization and the Evolution of the Supply Chain: who gains and who loses?
This paper focuses on two distinct facets of globalization: the decrease in the trade costs of goods and the decline of communication costs between headquarters and production facilities within firms. When the unskilled have about the same wage in the two regions, the decrease of these costs fosters the gradual agglomeration of plants in the core region accommodating the headquarters. By contra...
متن کاملDo European Carriers dominate their Hubs?
We analyze the phenomenon of hub dominance by developing a model relating fares to distance, using the main leg of intercontinental flights for scaling purposes. Our results indicate that at least some of the major European carriers place a mark up on flights originating from or going to their hubs.

Modern economic globalization would be impossible without our ability to move billions of tonnes of raw materials and finished goods among the continents and to fly at speeds approaching the speed of sound. These realities were made possible by the interaction of economic and technical factors. Much has been written about their organizational and political underpinnings (ranging from the role o...
